We chose Markus Iro from Gols in the North of the Neusiedlersee as our new Zweigelt
supplier for the quality and typicity of his wines, his experience and skill in the vineyard and winery, combined with great value. The autochton, meaning 'unique to', Austrian red grape variety Zweigelt was created by Dr. Zweigelt by crossing the also autochton varieties St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch in 1922, so just over a hundred years ago. Zweigelt now accounts for just under 14% of the area under vine in Austria.
After handpicking and 12 days on the skins then aged in large used oak, Iro's Zweigelt
features typical dark cherry notes, forest berries, liquorice and spices, juicy and elegant and rounded off with fine tannins.
Great with roast pork, pasta dishes
ABV: 13.5%
About Markus Iro
Markus Iro was born in Gols in 1983 — "vintage 1983, late harvest", as he describes himself — at the northernmost tip of the Neusiedlersee wine region in Burgenland. After graduating viticulture school and gathering practical experience in New Zealand and Germany, he returned home and at just 28 took over the family winery in 2011. Today he farms 24 hectares of vines — roughly 30% white, 70% red — across some of the region's most distinguished sites: Gabarinza, Ungerberg, Altenberg, Heideboden and others. Northern Burgenland's "Land of the Sun" gives the grapes the long, sunny ripening Markus needs to bring out their individual character.
His philosophy is direct: wine is a natural product and wants to be treated as such. He works with gut feeling, intuition and inspiration, drawing on the diversity of his vineyards — lime, gravel, clay and sand soils, Pannonian and continental climatic influences, surprisingly little rainfall — to make wines that reflect both site and season. Every vintage is a new challenge. Awards and the quiet loyalty of wine drinkers across Europe confirm he has the hand for it.
