We are not only sourcing the typical Zweigelt from the 24 hectare estate of Markus Iro in Gols but the region is also famous for silky and elegant St. Laurent. St. Laurent is another unique grape variety to Austria and is one of the ancestors of Austria's most famous red grape variety Zweigelt.
Hand picked and fermenting on their skins for 12 days, then aged in used oak, Iro's St.
Laurent features typical Burgundian notes, with sour cherry and red berries on the palate, fruity, silky and elegant.
Great with charcuterie and roast chicken
ABV: 13.5%
About Markus Iro
Markus Iro was born in Gols in 1983 — "vintage 1983, late harvest", as he describes himself — at the northernmost tip of the Neusiedlersee wine region in Burgenland. After graduating viticulture school and gathering practical experience in New Zealand and Germany, he returned home and at just 28 took over the family winery in 2011. Today he farms 24 hectares of vines — roughly 30% white, 70% red — across some of the region's most distinguished sites: Gabarinza, Ungerberg, Altenberg, Heideboden and others. Northern Burgenland's "Land of the Sun" gives the grapes the long, sunny ripening Markus needs to bring out their individual character.
His philosophy is direct: wine is a natural product and wants to be treated as such. He works with gut feeling, intuition and inspiration, drawing on the diversity of his vineyards — lime, gravel, clay and sand soils, Pannonian and continental climatic influences, surprisingly little rainfall — to make wines that reflect both site and season. Every vintage is a new challenge. Awards and the quiet loyalty of wine drinkers across Europe confirm he has the hand for it.
