Othmar Biegler, Zierfandler Badener Weg
The relationship with the Biegler winery goes back 35 years, when Christian Malnig picked grapes there as a teenager. The Biegler winery cultivates 8 hectares on the East and South-East facing slopes of the Anninger in Gumpoldskirchen, ideal for Riesling, the indigenous grape varieties Rotgipfler and Zierfandler and ideal conditions for stunning sweet wines. Othmar's motto is all about strict quality in the vineyard as the base for excellent wines. Pre-passes through the vineyard to de-select grapes, handpicking and sustainable practices like returning the pomace to the vineyard and vegan wine making are only some examples for Biegler's uncompromising quest for quality.
A natural cross between Roter Veltliner and an unknown variety, with only 61 hectars planted Zierfandler Badener Weg is even rarer than Rotgipfler from the same region. Colloquially also known as 'Spätrot' for its pink hue. Citrus, gooseberry and quince. Elegant, complex, fresh and long in its finish. Great with seafood, poultry and hard cheeses.
ABV: 13.5%
About Othmar Biegler
Weingut Biegler farms 10 hectares of vineyards in the Thermenregion, on the warm south-east slopes of the Anninger — the "house mountain" that gives Gumpoldskirchen its protection from frost and its warm fall winds. Born in 1962 and trained in Klosterneuburg and Germany before returning to take on the family estate, Othmar Biegler is, heart and soul, a Gumpoldskirchner. The whole family is hands-on. Operations are run by Dr. DI Veronika Biegler. The cellar sits in a romantic Hauerhaus in the village centre, where visiting wine enthusiasts from around the world come to taste with Othmar himself.
Biegler's wines have their own character: crystal-clear, elegant, varietal, spotless — and not particularly interested in following whatever trend the wine market is having. His own explanation is modest: "The most important thing happens in the vineyard, without my intervention. I can only support, and make sure the vines have the best conditions. The grapes stay on the vine until the very last moment, are picked selectively by hand, and processed quickly and cleanly." What he doesn't say is how much of the craft is in choosing the right moment for everything. He calls himself his own harshest critic, because he knows the full potential of his wines — "every weak point and every chance, however small."
